About Phil

Phil works from his home studio in a small hamlet on the north coast of Cornwall in the UK. His work focuses on wheel thrown tableware and decorative pit-fired pieces fired with sawdust and seaweed from local Cornish beaches. He takes his inspiration from his love of nature and the ever-changing Cornish coastline.

Originally from Liverpool, he spent over 30 years working as a surgeon, mainly in the UK but also in Africa and Australia. In 2017 he decided to make his hobby a full-time commitment, retired from surgery, and started Goonearl Ceramics.

He has taught manual skills throughout his whole career and specifically pottery over the last five. He loves sharing his own knowledge and collaborating with and learning from others.
